My salvation story began in 1987 this was a year after I was diagnosed with having a heart condition at age 19. A cousin of mine once mentioned to me that perhaps my health issues were augmented due to my past use of drugs and alcohol intake. As early as 14 years old I already developed hypertension and this eventually evolved into a heart condition referred to as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
I was in a hospital room when my Uncle showed up and gave me my first Bible to read back in February of 1986 he pointed to Psalm 91 as a starting point. I read the chapter but continued with a worldly lifestyle soon after I recovered until I watched an episode of the 700 Club one evening sometime between July and September of 1987, this was my turning point. I decided to stop running away from the Lord and finally obey His call and accept Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior.
Over time I served God and continued to suffer from the setbacks of my illness however I held on to the passage in 2 Corinthians 12:8-9 “three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me”.
I remember vividly to this day what my Cardiologist told me back then, he said and I am paraphrasing his words “perhaps you won’t be able to live beyond the age of fifty” and yet here I am at 54, though the “thorn in my flesh” remains the same I continue to faithfully serve the Lord until the day He calls me home.
